If you are looking for information on CBD Oil For Dogs and live in Canada, then you have wound up on the correct page. As far wellness products go, CBD seems to be getting more and more attention as the years go by. We will dive into a little about what CBD is and why people are looking to use CBD oil for dogs specifically here in Canada. Keep in mind CBD Oil is different than hemp oil for dogs.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD, which stands for Cannabidiol is one of over 113 cannabinoids in the Cannabis plant. THC is another of the 113 cannabinoids you are probably more familiar with. THC is the active cannabinoid that is known to give “high” or intoxicating effects when using marijuana products.

CBD started to become very popular due to the fact that it shares many benefits of THC but none of the intoxicating sides effects. CBD not only has shown it interacts with our human biological system but many mammals including dogs. All mammals have an endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS was discovered in the early ’90s and is responsible or connected to other biological systems such as; Central Nervous System, Gastrointestinal Systems, Hormones, Bones, Immune System, Metabolism, Muscles. There are receptors located all over our body called CB1 and CB2. When CBD is used it interacts with these receptors.

How Does CBD Interact With Dogs?

There are not many studies done specifically on dogs and the use of CBD. One thing we do know specifically is that dogs do have an endocannabinoid system and CB1 and CB2 receptors just like humans. This means that for all the uses that humans use it for, dogs also see similar uses. While the number of studies is lacking when it comes to our furry friends, there is an estimated 23,000 published papers on CBD and its effects on laboratory animals and humans.

A 2018 study done by Frontiers in Veterinary science did a small study to determine the effectiveness of CBD oil in dogs with osteoarthritis (OA). They also did this study alongside a placebo control. In this study, the dogs received 2mg/kg of CBD oil or placebo oil every 12 hours.  The treatment itself lasted for 4 weeks with a 2 week washout period. There were no observed side effects and the study showed a significant decrease in pain and increase in activity with the CBD oil. They concluded in the study that 2mg/kg of CBD twice daily can help increase comfort for dogs with OA.

The American Kennel Club has a good write-up on the impacts of CBD and its uses. They go on to say that CBD is used for a variety of ailments including Arthritis, Itchiness, Cancer, Behavior, Anxiety, Seizures, and many other ailments.

The biggest thing to know here is that if you are looking at giving your dog CBD then make sure you find a CBD product specifically marketed towards pets and has a THC level of under 0.03% THC.

What should I consider when buying CBD oil for dogs?

CBD in Canada is still in its infancy. This means that buyers beware when it comes to purchasing CBD for their pets in Canada currently. This is not to say there are not great products and great brands specific to Dogs and other pets. It simply means that all consumers regardless if they are buying CBD for their own consumption or their pet’s consumption should do their due diligence and research into ensuring they are buying what they think they are buying.

Hemp Oil is not CBD

We have come across many customers over the past few years who believed they purchased a CBD product and marketed it as a CBD product, but in the end, it was simply hemp seed oil. While it’s true both hemp seed oil and CBD are derived from hemp, the CBD content is extracted differently than hemp seed oil. Hemp seed oil is simply oil that is extracted from hemp seeds. There may be a trace amount of CBD in it, but nothing near the levels of true CBD products. I’ve seen some products available on big sites such as amazon that try to fool consumers into thinking hemp seed oil is in fact CBD oil. When you look closer into the actual ingredients though it does not list CBD as one of them.

Third-Party Lab Reports

If you are buying CBD Oil for dogs for the first time then ensure the company or retailer can provide lab reports. This should be the first determining factor. Lab reports will show values such as; CBD content, heavy metals, pesticides, and THC content. You want to ensure that you are buying something which has CBD but not THC. A great example of this would be on a product such as our CBDFX for dogs Canada large breed. View an example of the cbd_for_dogs_canada_lab_report here.

If the company you are looking at purchasing from does not have this there are many more choices to choose from.

Talk to your vet about CBD

Talking to your family veterinary is a great first step. Some vets may be pro-CBD and some may be against CBD for dog usage, it’s always wise to talk with your vet if you are considering trying it yourself. The side effects of CBD are pretty minimal when it comes to CBD. If your pet is currently on any other prescription drugs you want to ensure they won’t interact.

Possible Side Effects Of CBD Oil For Dogs & Pets

Deleted: During the last two and a half years providing CBD oil for our customer’s pets, we have not experienced many reports of side effects. This of course does not mean they do not exist but based on the feedback we get, it is not an overall concern.

Some common side effects we have seen include:

Dry Mouth – ensure your dog has drinking water available
Lower Blood Pressure – this is something we see in humans as well, notable if your dog is on blood pressure medication.
Diarrhea – Ensure you start very low in dosage and gradually work up. CBD or MCT oil which is the carrier liquid may upset some pets stomachs if dosing too much
Drowsiness – This can loop back again to dosing too much, or this may be the desired result for pets with anxiety, behavior, etc.

It’s also to note that with humans there may be an interaction with blood thinners and CBD so consult your vet if your pet is on blood thinner medication.

What Are Uses of CBD Oil For Dogs?

Being very careful not to indicate that CBD is a miracle drug or provides health claims, our customers use CBD for a wide range of ailments. The drive for using CBD among pet owners mostly comes from word of mouth between friends, family, or positive reviews. Over the years we have heard significant stories about how CBD was able to help their pets with pretty incredible results.

Keep in mind, dogs have an endocannabinoid system alongside CB1 and CB2 receptors. This is the same for humans, so many of the ailments humans are using it for can also be used for dogs. Here are some ailments people are using CBD, to name a few.

Anxiety
Seizures
Cancer Treatment
Inflammation
Arthritis
Osteoarthritis
Hip dysplasia
Sprains or strains
Broken Bones
Surgery Recovery
Torn Ligaments
Epilepsy
Reduce Pain
Irritable Bowel Disease

CBD Oil Or CBD Treats For Dogs?

There are a few choice options when considering giving your dog CBD. The standard option would be a CBD Oil Tincture made specifically for dogs. Dog CBD Oil is marketed towards dogs specifically because of their weight and the fact it does not usually contain more than trace amounts of THC. Full-spectrum CBD oil usually contains all the plant matter and a trace amount of THC. CBD Isolate usually just isolates the CBD from anything and everything else. If you have a choice a full spectrum usually is your best bet because of the full plant matter over just isolated CBD.

CBD Oil Tincture – The advantage of CBD oil in tincture format is that you buy it specifically for your pet’s weight. This makes dosing incredibly easy. Many of the CBD oils are now also starting to come out with flavoured options such as the CBDFX for large breed pets which have bacon flavouring added. The other advantage of a CBD oil tincture is that fact that you can vary the dosage (up or down) very easily.

It’s pretty simple to calculate the amount of CBD you are giving your pet through this calculation

1 bottle (30ml) contains as an example 300mg of CBD in the entire bottle. The dropper inside the bottle contains roughly 1ml of liquid or 25 individual drops (give or take). So you take your 300mg bottle and divide by 30ml = 300. That means that each 1ml contains approximately 10mg of CBD. Then you take 10mg of CBD and divide by 25 individual drops = 0.4mg per drop. You typically would not need to know this as the bottle you buy usually has a suggested serving size. It’s always nice to know how to calculate this though.

CBD Treats For Dogs – The other option we have for dog owners is Dog treats which contain CBD. These are much more convenient to give to your dog than CBD Oil. One disadvantage is if your dog either does not like the treats themselves. The other disadvantage is that it’s typically a single dosage per treat. This means if you want to vary the dosage you would have to split the treat in half which is not overly accurate. They still have a purpose and many of our customers love them.

How Much CBD Oil Should You Give Your Dog?

If you are not overly concerned with how much CBD oil your dog is getting then using the suggested serving size on the bottle is typically ok. If you want to fine-tune your CBD dosages (especially at the start) then use the low and slow method. By starting at a very low dosage and slowly moving up in dosage over days/weeks, you might find that your pet gets relief on a smaller dosage. The biggest advantage to you is that you save a lot of money in the long run. Instead of using 1ml which as an example may be a serving size, you may get away with using half that amount. This means your bottle would last twice as long. There is a big advantage of starting low in dosage and increasing it slowly. This is another way to avoid any side effects. If we do hear of pets having the more rare side effects it’s likely due to dosing too much too quickly.

Does CBD work for all Dogs?

It would be unethical to say that CBD works for all Dogs, or humans in that case. CBD has shown a great amount of promise in both dogs and humans. This certainly does not mean it works for all dogs, in all situations, and for all ailments. CBD is a great thing to try in my opinion, but there are some pets and ailments which might work for one pet owner and not another. This is another great reason to start low in dosage and slowly move higher. Dosing too high, to begin with, might be what causes the CBD not to work funny enough. Dosing too high may also lead to side effects that stop the owner from continuing to dose. Some pets see improvement right away after using CBD and others need to be using it for weeks. A good rule of thumb is to start low in dosage and slowly move up, continue to use daily for a 30 day period before making an opinion.
